From the Principal: 5/20/19

Dear Greenwood Families,

The school year continues to fly by! Classrooms in Grades 1-4 began their “ABC Countdown” on Tuesday to mark the final 26 days of the school year with a special theme each day. (Kindergarten is doing it too! They just started a couple of days earlier because they get out sooner.) Our 4th graders will be visiting the Galvin on Friday, which always makes it feel more “real” that they’ll be heading off to middle school soon. There is a lot happening here!

School Council Meeting Summary

The Greenwood School Council met for our final meeting of the year last Tuesday night. Our first topic of discussion included a review of Greenwood’s School Improvement Plan and progress toward our literacy, math, and high-leverage practice goals. Once classrooms have finished gathering end-of-year data, plans will be shared with the School Committee. The School Council then discussed strategies for sharing the outcomes from the homework surveys at the start of next year, in order to have a shared understanding between school and home about the purpose and goals of homework.

Something to think about - we will have an opening for a parent representative on the Greenwood School Council next year! More information will be distributed after the start of the start of school about how to apply and elections (if needed). In the meantime, thank you to Rochelle Rubino for your work on the Council!

Indoor Air Quality Testing

The Wakefield Public Schools are in the process of conducting indoor air quality testing throughout the district. These tests are commonplace in commercial buildings and occur on a scheduled basis to confirm a safe environment. In a continued effort to ensure our schools are in the best environmental condition for learning, the Wakefield Public School Department, in a coordinated effort with the DPW, is overseeing these tests to be conducted by the Department of Public Health.

An indoor air quality test will be administered by a representative from the State of Massachusetts Bureau of Environmental Health on Monday, May 20th during school hours. There will be minimal impact on learning, as the representatives will only need one to two minutes of testing time per classroom. During this time, these representatives will be testing for airborne particle matter, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, temperature, and relative humidity, while also conducting a visual inspection of building materials for water damage and/or microbial growth. Please let me know if you have further questions.

All School Meeting This Thursday

Our Kindergarten students will be hosting the All-School Meeting on Thursday, May 23rd at 9:00am. They will be teaching us all about the core value of “friendship.” We can’t wait to hear from them!

Math MCAS

It’s here! Our 3rd and 4th graders will be taking the Math MCAS assessment this week on Tuesday and Wednesday. We are confident that everyone will do their best math thinking and explaining! Just a reminder to make sure students arrive on time so that they can begin testing with their class - students who are tardy or absent will have a makeup session later in the week.

Thank you for everything you do to support your children and their learning!
