From the Principal: Sept 24

Dear Greenwood Families,

The weather is finally starting to feel more “fall-appropriate” and we can now start thinking about apple picking, pumpkins, and all those other wonderful activities we might enjoy during what I consider the best season to live in New England. However you chose to spend your time with family or friends this weekend, I hope that everyone is ready for another wonderful week of learning at Greenwood!

Back to School Night on Tuesday!
We can’t wait to see you at Greenwood’s Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, September 25th. This is an opportunity for the adults to come and meet the classroom teachers and specialists and to learn about classroom expectations and grade level curriculum. This is not a time for individual conferences - please reach out to the classroom teacher if you would like to arrange a time to speak specifically about your child. Once again the schedule for the evening is as follows:

  • 6:30 - 6:45 – Welcome remarks and staff introductions (gym)

  • 6:45 - 7:20 – Grades K-2 – parents report to classrooms

  • 6:45 - 7:20 – Specialists meet with grade 3 and 4 parents (gym)

  • 7:25 - 8:00 – Grades 3 and 4 – parents report to classrooms

  • 7:25 - 8:00 -- Specialists meet with grade K-2 parents

Early Release Wednesday, 9/26
Just a reminder that Wednesday, 9/26 is an early release day for our students. Lunch will be served at school before we dismiss at 11:55am.

Lunch Helpers
Lunch is a busy time around Greenwood, and we are so thankful for the volunteers who have been helping out in the cafeteria and on the playground while the kids eat, socialize, and play! In order to make it easier for you to pick your available times to volunteer and for the office to know when volunteers have signed up, there is a Sign-Up Genius form where you can select the days you are available to spend some time with us. Thank you in advance for helping our kids have a smoothly-running lunchtime!

Picture Book Donation from WAAV
The Wakefield Alliance Against Violence (WAAV) has purchased some books with the subject of acceptance of differences for each of the elementary schools - Greenwood received ours on Tuesday morning! These are the titles:

  • My Cousin Momo by Zachariah Ohora

  • Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andraea

  • Calvin Can’t Fly by Jennifer Byrne

  • The Cow That Laid an Egg by Andy Cutbill

  • The Sissy Duckling by Harvey Fierstein

  • Whoever You Are by Mem Fox

  • It’s Okay to Be Different by Todd Parr

  • All Kinds of People by Natalie Brown

  • Willow by Denise Brennan Nelson

  • Suki’s Kimono by Chieri Vegaki

  • The Boy Who Grew Flowers by Jennifer Wojitowicz

Teachers have already started to borrow them for use in the classroom, and we are in the process of coordinating with WAAV for guest readers to come to Greenwood and visit classrooms. We are so excited about this gift!

Communication
You may wonder why I keep including this note about communication each week, but I can’t emphasize enough how important it is that there is a clear and open line of communication between home and school to ensure your child has a happy and successful experience here at Greenwood. Staff e-mail addresses are listed on the “Staff Directory” section of the Greenwood School website. Time-sensitive messages during the school day should be directed to the office.

Thank you for everything you do to support your children’s learning both inside and outside of school!

Let’s have a great week!
