From the Principal: 9/16/19

Dear Greenwood Families,

Our first 6-day cycle is in the books, and we’ve even finished the first day of the next cycle!  We definitely felt like Greenwood School was “back in business” after just the first two days, so now we’re REALLY back.  I’m looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday night for Greenwood’s Back to School Night, which is an important time for us to come together and hear about classroom practices and expectations.  When we work together as a team, amazing things are possible! The Greenwood staff is ready for another great week, and I hope you are as well!

Fire Drill

Last Tuesday morning, we successfully completed our first school fire drill.  Students safely, quickly and quietly exited the building and gathered at their designated locations outside in a timely manner.  Fire drills are an opportunity for students to practice leaving the building while listening to the loud fire alarm to ensure that they know what to expect in case of an emergency.  We will continue to practice throughout the year so that students and staff feel prepared if there were to be an emergency that required us to evacuate the building, and communicate with families around these practices.

All-School Meeting Recap

Last Thursday, Greenwood students and staff gathered together in the gym for our first All-School Meeting of the 2019-2020 school year.  Our focus was on the importance of taking action to “Be Kind” to others, so some of our Greenwood staff thespians performed a reenactment of the book One by Kathryn Otoshi, to emphasize that “everyone counts” and standing up together makes us stronger.  This first All-School Meeting was “hosted” by me, but as we move through the year, different grade levels will take on the responsibility of planning and presenting. We will be sure to let families know when “their” grade level is on deck, in case you are able to join us!

Back to School Night

Once again, please note that Greenwood’s Back-to-School Night will be held on Tuesday, September 17th.  This is an opportunity for adults to come and meet the classroom teachers and specialists and to learn about classroom expectations and grade level curriculum.  Here is the schedule for the evening:

  • 6:15-6:30 – PTO & Community information tables; voting for School Council representative

  • 6:30-6:45 – Welcome remarks/staff introductions (gym)

  • 6:50-7:20 – Grade 3 & 4 parents report to classrooms

  • 6:45-7:30 – PTO & Community information tables; Voting; Specialists available to parents as needed

  • 7:25-8:00 – Grade K-2 parents report to classrooms

Greenwood Lunch Volunteers

We are always grateful to anyone who is able to take some time out of their day and volunteer in our cafeteria during lunchtime.  The kids get a kick out of seeing their family members here too! Our Sign-Up Genius link makes it easy to select those days/times that fit into your schedule.  Thank you in advance for your help!

Dogs on School Property

This is just a reminder for everyone that while many of us love our furry friends, there is a Wakefield School Committee policy stating that animals are not allowed on school property.  If you are at arrival or dismissal with a dog in tow, you must wait away from the school. This policy is for the safety and comfort of all of our students. Thank you for your attention to this!

Food Service Substitutes Needed

Lunch is a highly anticipated part of our school day, and we couldn’t make it happen smoothly without Ms. Mary and Ms. Melanie!  Food Services is having a bit of a shortage right now with substitutes and asked for schools to get the word out. If you’d be interested in finding out more about those opportunities, please contact Lisa Brown, Assistant Director of Food Services at 781-246-6440 x6947.

Communication

Communication is very important to us, so please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher should you have any questions or concerns throughout the year.  All staff email addresses are listed on the “Staff Directory” section of the Greenwood School website. Please know it can be challenging for staff members to access email during the school day, so please call the office with any time-sensitive messages.

Thank you for everything you do to support your children and their learning—let’s have a great week!
