Dear Greenwood Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Did you kids happen to mention anything about a “kindness challenge” toward the end of last week? (I’m hoping your answer is “yes”...but I know sometimes things get lost in the shuffle!) Greenwood came together for an All-School Meeting on Thursday morning, and I issued an October challenge for everyone to make sure to greet others when they pass them in the hallways, whether with a wave, a smile, or a quick “hello.” Greenwood is a wonderful community, and everyone should do their part to be inclusive. This is one small step anyone can do that can make a difference in someone’s day!
Early Release Wednesday 10/17
Just a reminder that Wednesday, 10/17 is an early release day for our students. Lunch will be served at school before we dismiss at 11:55am.
All School Meeting Recap
Last Thursday, Greenwood students and staff gathered together for our first All-School Meeting of the 2018-2019 school year. Since it was also Picture Day, everyone looked very spiffy! Our focus was on the importance of taking action to “Be Kind” to others. Students brainstormed and shared ways that they could show kindness, and some of our Greenwood staff thespians performed a reenactment of the book One by Kathryn Otoshi to emphasize that “everyone counts” and show the importance of standing up together to speak out against mean behavior. This first one was “hosted” by me, but as we move through the year, different grade levels will take on the responsibility of planning and presenting. We will be sure to let families know when “their” grade level is on deck, in case you are able to join us!
Evacuation Walk Practice
Just a reminder that on Tuesday, October 16, Greenwood will practice our evacuation drill beginning at 9:00 am. We should be back to school no later than 9:45am. If you are running behind that morning please try and ensure your children are here at school no later than 8:45am to minimize any confusion as we prepare to walk. Thank you!
Parent Workshop - “Motivating Struggling Students”
The Wakefield Parent Partnership and the Wakefield Special Education Parent Advisory Council are co-hosting a FREE speaker event entitled “Effective Solutions for Motivating Struggling Students.” It will be held on Thursday, November 8th from 7:00-9:00pm at Wakefield High School in the Savings Bank Theater. The guest speaker is Dr. Melissa Orkin, who will present practical, research-based strategies to foster engagement, persistence, and intrinsic motivation among elementary, middle, and high school students. Dr. Orkin is a Developmental Psychologist who specializes in learning disabilities and achievement motivation. It promises to be an evening full of useful discussion! If you have questions, please e-mail wakefieldpp@gmail.com for more information.
Thank you for everything you do to support your children’s learning both inside and outside of school!
Let’s have another great week!
