November is all about “Thanks” and “Giving”

Through the Greenwood School's Community Outreach program, there are many opportunities this month for your children to “give” to those less fortunate and say “thanks” to those who serve our country.

Halloween Candy Drive: THIS WEEK! November 1 through November 4:

Not sure what to do with the ten pounds of Halloween candy your kids collected this year?  Consider donating a portion to our men and women in uniform. Candy collected will be distributed through care packages for the holidays. We will collect candy from November 1 - 4 at the back of the school during drop off. We do need assistance collecting the candy. If you can help one of the days, please sign up to help collect candy. Please do not send the candy in with your child due to food allergies.

Election Day: Helping with Hot Chocolate November 8th:

Has this election season got you down? Pick up your spirits by volunteering to help run a hot chocolate stand outside of the Most Blessed Sacrament Parish on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8. Proceeds will go to the Wakefield Interfaith Food Pantry and the Wakefield Educational Foundation (WEF).

We are asking families to volunteer for hour-long shifts. Kids will pour hot chocolate, solicit patrons, collect money, and provide change. This is a great learning opportunity as well as a wonderful way to give back to the community. Sign up your family for a shift at the hot chocolate stand.

Thanksgiving Food Pantry Drive: November 1 through November 8:

Once again, we are collecting food for Thanksgiving packages for families in need. Kindly donate the items below by sending them in with your child or be placing them in the box outside the library:

  • Kindergarten: Boxed potatoes (mashed, au gratin, scallop)
  • First grade: Boxed stuffing
  • Second grade:Brownie mixes
  • Third grade: Cookie mixes
  • Fourth grade: Quick breads

Decorating Thanksgiving bags for the Food Pantry:

We are looking for 25 families to decorate bags with a Thanksgiving/fall theme for the Wakefield Interfaith Food Pantry. The bags will be distributed to students by November 1 and are due back at the school by Friday, November 4. Please email kcruise@rcn.com with the subject, “Thanksgiving Bags” if your child would like to volunteer (please provide your child’s name and grade).

It's easy to feel disconnected, as many parents juggle work, school, kids, and activity after activity. One of the most satisfying, fun, and productive ways to unite is volunteering for community service projects. Volunteerism also sets a good example for your kids and helps the community.  We hope you can participate in these outreach activities. For questions or more information, contact Katherine Cruise at kcruise@rcn.com.

Thanks for your support!
