From the Principal: 2/13/23

Dear Greenwood Families,

Happy Monday!  I always forget how many “interesting days”  the first couple of weeks in February have.  Groundhog Day is always a hit, even when the groundhog predicts more winter.  The 100th day of school, although it shifts a bit when we have days without school, falls generally in this time frame.  And we can’t forget that favorite of many elementary school-aged children…Valentine’s Day!  This week will also see teachers wrapping up units before everyone takes some time away.  Ready, set, go!

February Break - No School

I’m sure this is a reminder that probably doesn’t need stating, but just in case…there will be no school from Monday, February 20th through Friday, February 24th for February break.

All-School Meeting - 3rd Grade Hosting

Because it’s right when we come back from break, this is just a reminder that we will have our 3rd grade-hosted All-School Meeting on Monday, February 27th starting at 9:00am.  Each grade level is responsible for sharing about a positive attribute that we want our Greenwood community to embrace and embody.  We would like to invite 3rd grade parents/guardians to attend if you are able to do so.  (Seating will be up in the balcony.)

Greenwood PTO Meeting - Guest Speakers

Jenny Beardslee, Greenwood School Psychologist and Jennifer Hart, School Psychologist at the Galvin Middle School will be featured guest speakers at the Greenwood PTO Meeting on Wednesday, February 15th at 7:00pm.  Greenwood Elementary School will be the first WPS elementary school to participate in a 4th grade pilot screening initiative to identify students who may be struggling with anxiety and/or depression. As a district, Wakefield screens students at both the middle and high school levels. However, research supports better outcomes for our children when early interventions are implemented.  Please join us at the meeting on Wednesday to hear more about this initiative and ask any questions you may have (no matter what grade your children are in currently).

Report Cards

A printed copy of your child’s report card will be sent home with them on Wednesday, February 15th.  There will be a School Messenger sent out that same day with more general information about the elementary report cards and how to better understand them.  Please note: while there is a signature line on the report card, we do not need families to sign and return them to school.  This is your copy to keep.  If you have questions about anything specific to your child’s report card, please do not hesitate to reach out to their classroom teacher.

Lost & Found

If your child is missing a sweatshirt, jacket, hat, or other piece of apparel, please feel free to drop by and check out the bin.  Items that have not been claimed by the Friday before February break will be donated.  If you have any time before or after school this week and would like to help out with a “Lost and Found Display” at arrival or dismissal, please let me know!

Wakefield Spring Sports

With spring around the corner, there are many opportunities for your children to get involved in youth sports.  The schools have been asked to share the following list of links to organizations across Wakefield with open registrations:

Wakefield Little League - Wakefield Little League Baseball > Home (bluesombrero.com)

Wakefield Lacrosse - Wakefield Youth Lacrosse Association (wakefieldlacrosse.net)

Wakefield Youth Softball - Wakefield Youth Softball

Wakefield Soccer Association - Wakefield Soccer Association > Home

Wakefield Rec - Wakefield Recreation : Programs Programs & Memberships (myrec.com)

Increased student Involvement is the goal!

Lunchroom Volunteers

Thank you to everyone who has given us some of your valuable time over the past few weeks!  Updated time slots are being added at the current link and go through the end of February.

Do you have any free time between 12:00-1:15pm on school days?  Or 10:30-11:50am on early release days?  Looking for a way to help out at Greenwood?  We are finally bringing back lunchroom volunteer opportunities!  If you’d like to come in and help support students while they’re eating lunch, please see the linked Sign-Up Genius to select time slots over the next two weeks.  Single days, multiple days, one time slot, the whole lunch block…we welcome any and all helpers!

As an FYI, as we begin to implement the food rescue/composting program, we will be incorporating our lunchroom volunteers into this work.  Don’t worry…it’s easy!

NOTE: You will need to have a CORI form completed before coming in for any lunch shifts - please contact Ms. Paiva about the process or to check if you have a current one on file
