From the Principal: 12/14/20

Dear Greenwood Families,

Happy Monday!  I hope those of you who have had a conference already enjoyed the opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher and share information about how their year is going so far.  Teachers love to talk about their students, and that communication with families is especially important in this different kind of school year.  For those of you with appointments this week, we can’t wait!

Greenwood School Council

Every school in Massachusetts is required, by statute, to have a school council made up of parents and teachers that serves as an advisory board to the principal.  We do have an open parent slot this year, and I am looking to hear from anyone who might be interested in being a part of the Council.  If we have a lot of interest, the Greenwood PTO will facilitate an election to fill that position.  Please send me an email if you’re interested (or just interested in learning more).  Thanks!

Cultural Arts Programs

Our first Greenwood Cultural Arts program this year is Grooversity, a Brazilian Music performance group.  It is scheduled for this Wednesday, December 16th from 10:45-11:30am and will involve all Greenwood students (hybrid and full remote) at all grade levels.  The Zoom meeting link will be shared via Google Classroom for hybrid families and will be emailed directly to parents and students for our full remote families.  We can’t wait to see everyone together!

Mask Drive—ends this Friday!

Alyssa Toppi, a senior at WMHS this year, is organizing a mask collection drive over the next two weeks.  All masks collected will be brought to a Boston-area Crayons to Cradles location for donation.  Please see the linked flyer for more information.

Early Release Day - December 23rd

Wednesday, December 23rd is an early release day, which means an adjustment to the schedule to ensure that both AM and PM cohorts have an opportunity to see their teachers that day.  We will use the same format that we did on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving:

  • AM & PM cohorts will attend Morning Meeting together from 8:25-8:55am on Wednesday, December 23rd.  (This is for the hybrid model - full remote will receive a separate communication)

  • Students will have asynchronous work to complete during the morning.

  • There will be no specialist classes this day.

  • The elementary school day ends at 11:30am.

WEF S.T.A.R.S.

Looking for a way to recognize a special WPS Staff Member who has made a difference for your child?  You can make a donation to the Wakefield Educational Foundation in their honor!  Please see the linked flyer for more details - all requests must be received by Monday, December 21, 2020.

Wakefield Human Rights Commission - Service Awards

As the Wakefield HRC works to plan the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King Day celebration for January 18, 2021, they are seeking nominations of individuals who have made significant contributions in promoting human and civil rights to receive a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King Service Award.  Please see the linked flyer for more information about award criteria and how to nominate someone.

Fundraiser for the WMHS Black Student Union

Dine out for a good cause!  On Thursday, December 17th, Fuddruckers in Reading will donate 20% of your total meal price to the Wakefield Memorial High School Black Student Union.  Meals must be purchased between 12:00-7:00pm, and this flyer has to be presented to the cashier.

Just another reminder about how much we appreciate everyone’s support of our efforts to keep everyone safe by practicing and promoting safety precautions, which include hand hygiene, mask-wearing, social distancing, and avoiding large group gatherings and travel to high-risk states where the rates of transmission are high.
