From the Principal: 11/15/21

Dear Greenwood Families,

Happy Monday!  I was able to spend a little time at the Greenwood PTO’s Holiday Pop-Up Market on Saturday morning, and it was great to see so many families there to check out the event!  I saw lots of activity in the Book Fair section of things, which is always wonderful.  So nice of the weather to cooperate and allow our Gator community to spend time together once again!

Early Release - Wednesday, November 17th

Our next early release day for students is on Wednesday, November 17th.  All students will be dismissed at 11:55am in order for WPS staff to hold conferences in the afternoon.  Please note: there will be a scheduled lunch block for students prior to dismissal.

Rescheduled - Picture Day Makeup

The makeup date for school pictures was originally scheduled for next week, but due to delays in processing, O’Connor has changed the date to Wednesday, December 1st.  We’ll send out a reminder at the start of that week.

FYI - WPS Parent University - Social Media, Tech Trends, and Your Student

Screen-time limits. Tik Tok. Parental controls. Do you need some guidance? On Monday, November 15, 2021  at 7 p.m., Wakefield Public Schools’ Parent University program will offer “Social Media, Tech Trends, and Your Student: A conversation with internet safety expert Katie Greer.”

Having worked at both the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police, internet-safety expert Katie Greer recognizes that parents want to better understand the boundaries (and opportunities!) of technology. In this webinar, she will guide caregivers on how their children can use the internet in a safer, more productive way, from recognizing health traps to protecting themselves with privacy precautions.

Caregivers will learn about:

  • Updates on the latest tech trends including popular apps, social networking trends, gaming, sexting, and more

  • Social media age limitations - and how often kids are breaking them

  • Privacy settings, location services, check-ins: Are your devices set-up safely?

  • Advice for having real conversations with your child to foster a positive online experience for your family, with suggested restrictions and rules

  • Digital health check-in: Is your family doing a good job balancing life and technology?

  • Smartphones & Age: What's the average age kids get smartphones? Are there alternatives? Is there a right age for kids to get smartphones?

This virtual session will be held via Zoom using meeting ID: 831 0832 0880 and passcode: 028833.

Wakefield Public Schools Parent University, launched in 2014, provides social-emotional, technology, and academic workshops for caregivers of students in the community. Originally an in-person day of programming, recent outreach has been virtual with keynotes and interactive workshops held throughout the year.

Lunch Monitor Needed

Our current lunch monitor will be leaving us at the end of this week to take on a full-time role with WPS Food Services, which leaves us with an open position!  Our lunch monitor works from 11:45-1:30pm each day, supporting students while they eat and helping transition between lunch blocks.  If you or anyone you know might be interested in taking on this role, please check out the job posting or reach out to me for more information.
