Dear Greenwood Families,
Happy Monday! It was great to see Greenwood families at the Science Fair on Saturday morning. There was a little bit of something for everyone, with topics ranging from crystals to “fruit batteries” to Pokemon energy levels. There’s a lot to be said about getting the chance to really delve into a topic of interest, and when you can share what you’ve learned with others, that just makes it even better!
MA Safe Routes to School Event
Massachusetts Walk, Bike, and Roll to school day is Wednesday, May 3rd! Many of our Greenwood families already travel to school via safe, active commutes, and this is a day when everyone in the Commonwealth is encouraged to do so as well. Wakefield police officers will be on site at each of the schools to welcome all our walkers, bikers, and rollers that morning, and we’ll have stickers, bookmarks, and music to greet everyone at arrival. Looking forward to another fun arrival activity!
Optional Class Placement Survey
This is the time of the school year when we start our process of looking ahead toward planning for the fall, and one of the most important projects we have ahead of us is class placement. On Monday, May 1st, families of students in grades K-3 will receive a brief optional online survey that will give you the opportunity to provide input about your child if you so choose. More details will be sent along with the survey form, but we are asking for any input to be provided no later than Friday, May 12th.
For our Grade 4 families...Galvin Middle School has its own process for students entering 5th grade in the fall, and they will be in communication about that (if they haven’t already been in touch).

MCAS - Grades 3 & 4
Round 1 is complete, but we’re not quite done with MCAS for this year yet! On Monday, May 22nd and Tuesday, May 23rd, our Greenwood 3rd and 4th grade students will be taking the Math MCAS. Sessions will begin right at the start of the school day, and while students are given as much time as they need to finish, the recommended session time is 90 minutes per session. If you have a known conflict with these dates, please do not hesitate to reach out.
End of the Year Dates - Clarification
A couple of folks reached out with questions about early release vs. full days for the end of the year dates. Hopefully this helps! (Don’t hesitate to reach out if you still have questions though.)
Tuesday, 6/20 - Last day for Greenwood Kindergarten - Early Release for K only
Wednesday, 6/21 - Greenwood Kindergarten Screening; Full day for Grades 1-4
Thursday, 6/22 - Last day for Greenwood 1st-4th Grades - Early Release
STEAM Night
STEAM Night is back! This year it will take place on Thursday, May 11th from 5:30-7:00pm at the Galvin. This interactive elementary math and science showcase will feature hands-on experiences from iRobot, Lark Studio, Curious Creatures, and Spot the Robot Dog, along with many offerings from WPS staff members and PTO groups. It’s sure to be a good time!
Food Rescue Program - Volunteer Drivers Needed
Our lunchtime composting and food rescue programs are going strong! However, we could use some help in getting the food donations picked up at Greenwood and delivered to the designated locations in Wakefield, Stoneham, or Melrose. Food pickup can be done anytime after 1:30pm on a selected date. Please visit the link below for more information and to sign up. Thanks in advance!
Lunchroom Volunteers
Thank you to everyone who has given us some of your valuable time over the past few weeks! Updated time slots are being added at the current link and now go through the end of May.
Do you have any free time between 12:00-1:15pm on school days? Or 10:30-11:50am on early release days? Looking for a way to help out at Greenwood? We are finally bringing back lunchroom volunteer opportunities! If you’d like to come in and help support students while they’re eating lunch, please see the linked Sign-Up Genius to select time slots over the next two weeks. Single days, multiple days, one time slot, the whole lunch block…we welcome any and all helpers!
As an FYI, we will be incorporating our lunchroom volunteers into the food rescue/composting program work. Don’t worry…it’s easy!
NOTE: You will need to have a CORI form completed before coming in for any lunch shifts - please contact Ms. Paiva about the process or to check if you have a current one on file
