From the Principal: 3/13/23

Dear Greenwood Families,

Happy Monday!  Hopefully everyone remembered to spring their clocks forward an hour…although so many devices in our lives now do it automatically, it’s not the task it used to be!  I’m just happy that since we’re moving ahead, I won’t be startled by the time on my car clock when I leave for work on Monday!  (It never fails to give me a moment of panic in the fall when the clock shows a time an hour later than it actually is.)  And who knows…maybe this is the year that permanent Daylight Saving Time sticks?

Arrival & Dismissal Safety

Making sure that kids get to school safely and leave without any problems at the end of the day is extremely important to us.  As an elementary school, it falls to the adults to make appropriate choices and follow directions in order for that to happen.  It is extremely important not only for those in vehicles to obey posted signs, but also for everyone to listen to and comply with the instructions and/or guidance given by our crossing guards on Main Street and Greenwood Avenue.  Along with student safety, they are monitoring the big picture and working hard to keep the flow of traffic moving.

A couple of specific issues:

  •  On Greenwood Avenue, if you need to park longer than quickly dropping your child off and/or exit your vehicle for any reason, please do so outside of the live drop-off zone (designated by “No Parking - Bus Only” signs)

  • Non-school vehicles are not allowed to enter the front driveway circle around arrival and dismissal times.

  • The back parking lot is for Greenwood staff members.  Families dropping off or picking up students should not be pulling into the lot to do so.

Everyone’s cooperation in this is not simply appreciated, but necessary.  Thanks!

Next All-School Meeting - 2nd Grade Hosting

It’ll be here before we know it!  We will have our 2nd grade-hosted All-School Meeting on Monday, March 20th starting at 9:00am.  Each grade level is responsible for sharing about a positive attribute that we want our Greenwood community to embrace and embody.  We would like to invite 2nd grade parents/guardians to attend if you are able to do so.  (Seating will be up in the balcony.)

WPS Parent University

The following message went out to all WPS families on Friday.  Don’t miss out on this great opportunity!

Parent University Workshop Registration is now open! Hosted by the Wakefield Public Schools, Wakefield’s Parent University offers parents and caregivers programming that addresses academic, social-emotional, and technology topics. On the heels of two successful virtual keynote presentations, we’re pleased to offer in-person workshops on Saturday, March 25 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Woodville Elementary School.

This series of casual, interactive sessions are facilitated by Wakefield Public Schools staff and community partners. From college planning to navigating social media to a review of Wakefield’s English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum review, they cover a variety of topics that span all grade levels. The full schedule is now available at bit.ly/WakefieldParentU. Registration is open to all and not limited to Wakefield residents.

Wakefield Academy will provide free on-site childcare for attendees. They will partner with Buildwave, SportsZone 101, CodeWiz, HipKids, Kids Test Kitchen, and Wicked Cool for Kids to ensure the morning is full of fun activities. Childcare is available for children ages 4 to 13 and registration is March 21; day-of drop offs cannot be accommodated. Secure your spot today!

Reminder 2023 MCAS Dates - Grades 3 & 4

These went out in a previous message, but just in case you missed them…MCAS testing for grades 3 & 4 will take place on the following days:

English/Language Arts - Wednesday, April 12th and Thursday, April 13th

Math - Monday, May 22nd and Tuesday, May 23rd

Testing begins at the start of the school day.  Children who are absent or significantly tardy on the day of testing will take that day’s session during a makeup time on a different day.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Lunchroom Volunteers

Thank you to everyone who has given us some of your valuable time over the past few weeks!  Updated time slots are being added at the current link and now go through the end of March.

Do you have any free time between 12:00-1:15pm on school days?  Or 10:30-11:50am on early release days?  Looking for a way to help out at Greenwood?  We are finally bringing back lunchroom volunteer opportunities!  If you’d like to come in and help support students while they’re eating lunch, please see the linked Sign-Up Genius to select time slots over the next two weeks.  Single days, multiple days, one time slot, the whole lunch block…we welcome any and all helpers!

As an FYI, we will be incorporating our lunchroom volunteers into the food rescue/composting program work.  Don’t worry…it’s easy!

NOTE: You will need to have a CORI form completed before coming in for any lunch shifts - please contact Ms. Paiva about the process or to check if you have a current one on file
