Dear Greenwood Families,
I hope that you all had a wonderful extended long weekend and had the opportunity to do something special together! Teachers and staff took time on Friday to learn more about our new FOSS science teaching kits, find out more about using interactive read aloud in their classrooms, and began to develop grade level Learn Anywhere assignments (even though we’re hoping for fewer snow days!) based on experience and feedback from last year. We’re excited to bring this learning all back to the kids!
October Safety Month
During the month of October, we will be spending some time at Greenwood practicing our required safety drills and making sure students and staff know what to do “just in case.” As we coordinate dates with the town, we will be sure to communicate them to you in order to facilitate conversations with your children.
Evacuation Walk Practice
On Tuesday, October 16, Greenwood will practice the procedure for leaving the school and relocating to an off-campus site. The initial steps for leaving the building are the same as for a fire drill, which we have already practiced as individual classrooms and twice as a whole school. In the case of an event where students and staff are not safely able to re-enter the building, we walk to our designated site, which is the Most Blessed Sacrament Parish at 1155 Main Street. Our evacuation practice will begin at 9:00 a.m., and we should be back to school no later than 9:45am. A police detail will be present to assist us in street crossings. Keep your fingers crossed for a sunny day!
Parent Workshop - “Motivating Struggling Students”
The Wakefield Parent Partnership and the Wakefield Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) are co-hosting a FREE speaker event entitled “Effective Solutions for Motivating Struggling Students.” It will be held on Thursday, November 8th from 7:00-9:00pm at Wakefield High School in the Savings Bank Theater. The guest speaker is Dr. Melissa Orkin, who will present practical, research-based strategies to foster engagement, persistence, and intrinsic motivation among elementary, middle, and high school students. Dr. Orkin is a developmental psychologist who specializes in learning disabilities and achievement motivation. It promises to be an evening full of useful discussion! If you have questions, please e-mail wakefieldpp@gmail.com for more information.
Thank you for everything you do to support your children’s learning both inside and outside of school!
Let’s have another great week!
