This FREE, before-school, physical activity program takes place from 7:45 - 8:25 a.m. It was inspired by Dr. John Ratey’s book “Spark.” Dr. Ratey, of Harvard Medical School, states that “exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to optimize the function of our brains.” Classes are filled with team-oriented games and provide plenty of opportunity for play, since the program focuses on fun!
A typical BOKS class is 40 minutes long and consists of:
- Fun warm-up game or movement drills
- Running activity, relay races, obstacle courses and strength movements
- Fun game
- Cool down and a BOKS Bit (a nutritional component of the program)
BOKS FAQs:
Is there transportation for BOKS?
Parents will be responsible for transporting their children to school. Children who attend a before school program are eligible to enroll and participate.
Where does the program take place?
Outdoors, beginning at the track at the back of the school. If weather is bad, we will move inside and a trainer will be at the front door to meet your child. If your child is in the before school program, they must report there first, where they will they will be picked up by a BOKS volunteer.
What if my child is injured?
Our lead trainer is CPR-certified. And all trainers are prepared for most medical 'things' that arise
Is attendance taken every class?
Yes. We ask that you email GreenwoodBOKS@gmail.com if your child will be absent.
Do participants have to attend every class?
We request that you register your child with the intent of attending every class. We want to measure the benefits of the program. Additionally, classes are staffed for the maximum number of children and it is unfair for children who want to participate but can’t because of space limitations.
Who is in charge?
Nicole Jacob and Tara Durrant, both fourth grade parents, are the lead BOKS instructors. Communicate with them about the BOKS program via email at GreenwoodBOKS@gmail.com.
How do I report an absence or an issue?
This program is a BOKS program run by dedicated volunteers who are not members of the school staff. Please direct all questions and communications to GreenwoodBOKS@gmail.com, and NOT to the Greenwood School office.
